Some more Facebook chat spams and infections

We have heard about many malicious application affected many people on facebook. Now this is the new one in which people are receiving the following kind of message from their friends:

I can’t believe that you can see who is viewing your profile! I can see the TOP 10 people and I am really OPENMOUTHED that my EX is still checking me every hour. You can also see WH0 CHECKS YOUR PR0FILE here @ [LINK]

Facebook infectionsAs I adviced in my last post also, do not click on such sort of malicious links. If you do make mistake of clicking it then you will be asked to ‘Allow’ a third party application, which demands access of your Facebook profile.

You may be tempted to click on ‘Allow’ to know who is checking your profile. But this is a malicious application. If you click on ‘Allow’ button then it means you are giving the application rights to post messages to your wall. Which may lead your Facebook friends to click on this link.
In the meantime You may also be asked to participate in a survey to win fabulous prizes. And to make this survey legitimate there’s interesting use of the Windows Security Center’s shield icon, shown in following figure:

The fact is that there is no way of finding out who has been viewing your Facebook page.Any application which claims it is going to tell you who has been stalking your Facebook profile is lying.
What if you already clicked on some malicious link or application? Then you should clean up your account before any further damage is done. I would discuss this in my next post.

Facebook chat spams and infections

“I have not sent any chat message guys. It is a spam. Please ignore it.” I was communicating this messages to all my facebook friends last week. It was because my facebook chat message had gone mad and was sending some auto malicious links to all my friends. My friends were clicking it because they found it trustworthy and it was sent by my facebook id.
following kinds of messages were sent:

With the exponential increase in popularity of Facebook, it has now become the common playground for spammers. There are many ways they can harm your online image and compromise your confidential details. This is spreading mainly  because of the malicious third-party application. So while on facebook follow the golden rule that don’t allow any suspicious third-party applications, even if they seem very attractive to you.

While using any application read carefully before you click on the ‘Allow’ button. And do not give more than basic permission to the application. You can see in following screenshot the malicious application is asking for chat access permission. It means that application can use my facebook chat to send auto message to my entire friend list.

Be careful not only to protect your computers from viruses but also to save your online image.

Facebook status message to Tahrir square

February 18, 2011 Leave a comment

Asmaa MahfouzThis is one of the live, latest and largest examples in front of us demonstrating the power and impact of social media. A Facebook status message, from a 26 years old woman Asmaa Mahfouz worried about her country, “People, I am going to Tahrir Square”. The message soon spread like a wild fire in the whole of Egypt. This fueled their emotions and brought them together on the same platform at the same time. This is the power of social media.

The revolution of Egypt now called the jasmine revolution is worth a case-study on how a social media networking tools like Twitter, Facebook and Blogs can act as a catalyst to call up people to organize and unite them against any wrongful conduct. Eventhough TV channels were banned and media rights curbed, systematic flow of information was there. This was perhaps the only bloodless peoples revolution staged entirely on the web forcing the powerful president to step down.

social media networkingThe power and impact of social media can not be neglected. We know and are part of many groups on Facebook and other social media network which are formed for some cause or against some corruption/ wrongdoing in the society. These groups are joined by thousands of people who not only exchange their thoughts but also connect with each other
to bring the desired result. There is a group against corruption on Facebook with 11000+ members which got about 1000+ people marching against corruption in Delhi, few sundays ago.

One more example can be taken is from twitter. Trending topics categorized worldwide/country/city wise and use of hash tag. It can be observed that thousands of people across the world discuss/exchange their views at a specific time. Using of hashtag help brings people on the same page of discussion. The speed of spreading word is really exponential in the social media. We are innovating. clap clap

Which are the groups you are following do share or write to me.

Evolving Social media

February 17, 2011 1 comment

social mediaSocial media is evolving every moment. When we look at Facebook and the way it has evolved since 2004. Originally seens as a “evolved” version of Orkut, today it manages to frighten the likes of many. LinkedIn has evolved as a very professional network and today Quora is also seen in high regard. I am sure in another few years, say 2015 we have no clue as to what would be th enew social media like. Will it be web, mobile, videos or  culmination of all and more? Do you have any guesses?

With Facebook having over 600 million users, the rules of the game are changing dramatically. Approximately 2.5 billion vidoes/day are being watched on Facebook itself. Then there is YouTube with its loyal fan following. Flickr, another great site for sharing images records 130 million uploads per month.

On an average they have about 6-7 years of existence and they have completely changed the way we now look at internet, society, friends, business, jobs, lifestyle etc. Almost every professional company have their presence in social media to interact with their current/prospective customers. It is not surprising that 80% of companies use social media for recruitment.

Even the traditional media and businesses recognize the power of Social Media and its impacts on individuals, businesses, and society. So they are putting social front and center on marketing materials that not only looks relevant, but more importantly sends a message that you are open to a two-way conversation at their place. It’s also a convenient way to send the message across beyond a TV ad, piece of point of sale, brochure, etc.

Social media doesn’t have an entry barrier. Every individual can become a news creator, subject matter expert, initiator, and social activist using blogs, micro-blogs, social sharing, and networking sites. Its a right platform which provides an equal opportunity for everyone to voice their thoughts, opinions, and share information with the world.

When was the last time you were searching for books/camera/mobile online and saw ads of the same in your facebook, gmail very same day/next day? It’s not definitely not a coincidence. We are evolving as we speak.

Share your views.
